The Modern Mr. Darcy

The beauty of Pride and Prejudice is that you feel like you are a part of the rural English country. Jane Austen’s powerful voice sweeps us away into this age-old romance. You feel the second hand embarrassment for Mr. Collins. You feel the helplessness of Charlotte. You feel the confusion of Elizabeth, and you swoon because of Mr. Darcy. Why is Mr. Darcy capable of giving us Austenians butterflies in our stomachs, even more than over two centuries later? Would he be able to do that in the twenty first century?

Mr. Darcy in 2017 is a business tycoon. He is handsome, suave, and owns a lot of land in the countryside. I sort of picture him as a rich, handsome, but low-profile type of a boss. He is rude to those who he doesn't like, but extra soft to those who know the real him. He also probably made an appearance on the cover of Vogue.

Mr. Darcy now drives a sleek black Porsche and plays polo with his best friend and business partner Mr. Bingley. Maybe, he meets Elizabeth at some business party. Elizabeth obviously the hates modern Darcy because he is cocky, conceited and honestly looks too good ffs! He rocks the whole tall-dark-and-handsome vibe.

The best thing about Modern Darcy is  -TEXTING! He is a lot less anti-social when he is texting and can hold a proper conversation for 3 whole minutes. Also he is much more “ardent” online. I think this texing sort of breaks the ice between them.

I think of any more reasons that the modern Mr. Darcy will have an edge on the old. Because at the end, Mr. Darcy of the Regency era wore tailcoats. And Mr. Darcy in tailcoats.
